First 48 Hours After a Death

Start with the next necessary step, not every possible task. These suggestions are a starting point for families in the United States, not a universal deadline or a requirement to finish everything in two days.

First, ask who is coordinating the next steps

If a hospital, care facility or hospice team is involved, ask that team what happens next and who your point of contact is. Procedures differ by state, facility and circumstances. If someone may still need urgent medical help, contact emergency services rather than using this page to determine whether they have died.

Choose a few practical priorities

You can ask someone you trust to help with one specific task. Keep a short list of calls, names and questions so you do not have to remember everything.

  • Tell the closest people privately and decide who will pass along updates.
  • Arrange help for children, other dependents and pets.
  • Locate any known funeral preferences and the contact details of the person handling arrangements.
  • Write down questions for the facility, funeral provider or appropriate professional.

Ask about arrangements before agreeing to purchases

For providers covered by the FTC Funeral Rule, you can ask for prices by telephone and receive an itemized price list when you visit. Ask which choices are optional and which requirements apply to your circumstances. You do not have to treat a package as your only choice.

Make a list of paperwork and notifications

Ask how to obtain certified death certificates and which organizations need them. Availability and procedures vary; certificates may not be ready within 48 hours. USAGov links to the relevant government processes rather than treating every situation the same.

Check who is notifying Social Security

Funeral homes generally report a death to Social Security. Ask whether that will be handled. If no funeral home is involved or it does not report the death, follow Social Security’s instructions directly. Do not put identity documents or sensitive identifiers into a public message.

Give yourself room for the next day

Keep the immediate list small. Identify what needs attention now and what can be discussed later with the right professional. Styson48 offers practical educational resources; it does not determine legal authority, confirm a death or manage arrangements for you.
